What is Damiana?

I’ve posted about our Flor de Amor products, but today I wanted to share some more about their main ingredient, the magical herb, damiana.

Damiana, also known as Turnera diffusa, is a low-growing plant with yellow flowers and fragrant leaves, that grows in Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies. The origin of the common name damiana comes from the Greek daman or damia meaning "to tame or subdue."

Damiana’s use as an herbal remedy predates written history. By the time the Spanish crossed the Atlantic, indigenous cultures had been using the leaf and stem for centuries to increase sexual desire, as an aphrodisiac and bladder tonic.

WHAT IT’S USED FOR

Traditionally, damiana has been used as a heart opener, mood elevator, to calm the nerves, and even as an aid for stress and anxiety. This herb can help increase sexual arousal and stamina in men and women.  The multi-dimensional botanical serves to treat mild asthma, and stomach complaints such as dyspepsia, diarrhea, and constipation and to improve symptoms of menopause and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

HOW TO CONSUME DAMIANA

To use damiana, you consume its leaves. The leaves can come in different formats: dried damiana leaf to be brewed into a tea, made into a tincture, used in herbal smoking blends, or powdered and encapsulated.

Our Flor de Amor products have taken damiana and created tinctures, mysts, pure essential oils, and massage oils. We even have chocolate infused with damiana essential oil.
